Antique Japanese Kyōdai Mirror Chest — Deep Walnut Bara-makume, 1920s, Taishō

Quiet elegance carved from the shadows

With its softly rounded mirror frame and sculpted skirt, this vanity whispers Meiji modernism sliding gracefully into Taishō romance. The wood—likely kuri (Japanese chestnut) stained to a rich walnut—shows swirling rose-petal figure, the grain forming bouquets that blossom across each drawer front. Picture a kimono seamstress checking the drape of new silk amid candlelight; the same muted glow now flatters contemporary interiors from loft dressing room to spa boutique.

Inside, shallow drawers once held kanzashi hair sticks; today they cradle watches, jade rollers, or your favorite koh-dō incense cones. Brass key escutcheons and pulls retain their original patina, a tactile link to 1920s jazz cafés of Ginza.
