This is an antique Japanese lacquered Wheelled chest called Kuruma Tansu from late Edo (1860's).
It was constructed from Suginoki (Cryptomeria) and Hinoki (Cypress) woods and the iron fittings were hand made.
Kuruma tansu was used to store very valuable items, when there was a fire, it could be pushed to safety; however, this large Kuruma tansu blocked the street during fire, and people could not escape, so it was eventually no longer made.
It is vary rare and hard to find Kuruma tansu and will be great add to your tansu collection.
