This is an antique Japanese personal storage chest called Ko Tansu from middle Meiji period (1880's-1890's).  It was used to store letters, documents, books and other items for daily use.  Made of 100% Paulownia wood (Kirinoki). 

Behind the sliding door,s there is a large compartment and 6 drawers are ideal to store various size of items.
