Antique Japanese Kimono Chest (Tansu) — 1920s, Taisho Era (SKU A330)
A Tower of Tranquility Crafted in Kiri Wood
Standing with quiet dignity, this vintage Japanese kimono chest from the Taisho era whispers of refined tradition and everyday grace. Known as ishō tansu (衣装箪笥), such chests were once a staple in Japanese households, entrusted with the care of seasonal garments, silken kimono, and family heirlooms.
Crafted from beautifully grained kiri (paulownia) wood, prized for its lightweight yet protective properties, this piece exudes subtle elegance. The symmetrical structure is both functional and poetic: sliding cabinet doors at the top offer concealed space, while five drawers beneath—with iron ring handles and keyholes—echo the rhythm of daily ritual. Each drawer opens with satisfying precision, its interior seasoned by the passage of time.
