This is a 2 section antique Japanese stacking chest called Kasane Isho Tansu from Middle Meiji period ( 1880's - 1890's). It is made of Kiri (Paulownia) and the iron fittings were all hand made.

Tansu comes with large round lockplates with Kamon, family creset and Kakute (square0style handles.

Each section can be used separately for versatility or stacked together to save space.  Each section has carrying handles to easily move from place to place.

Originally used to store Japanese kimono, obi and accessories, its present day use works well for clothes storage in the bedroom or linen storage in the living room or dining room of a contemporary house.
