This sugi wood box is from 1950s.

The Kakesuzuri is a traditional Japanese money box, commonly used in the Edo and Meiji periods. This vintage piece is crafted from sugi (Japanese cedar) wood, prized for its light weight and natural grain, giving the box a beautiful, rustic appearance. The wood’s rich patina, developed over decades, adds to its antique charm.

Cast iron handles on either side are typical of the Kakesuzuri design, making it easy to transport, while the iron corner pieces serve both decorative and functional purposes, reinforcing the box and protecting it from wear. These iron fittings often bear intricate detailing, showcasing the craftsmanship of the period.

Kakesuzuri boxes were used for storing money and important documents, often in merchant households or businesses. The name “Kakesuzuri” refers to its suspended design, as some versions were meant to hang, although most were placed on counters. These boxes symbolize both practicality and elegance, reflecting Japan’s merchant culture during the Edo period.
