Description

This is an antique Japanese merchant chest called Choba Tansu from the mid Meiji period (1880's-1890's). It was constructed from Paulownia wood (Kirinoki).

Merchant chests were usually displayed in a prominent location of a shop as a way to show their customers the success and prosperity of the business.  Similar to this piece, they usually have lots of iron hardware to contrast against the wood giving a feeling of business permanence and stability.

This antique Japanese tansu will make a great addition to any home decor.
