This is a vintage Japanese Okidoko, low chest / stand from Taisho period (1910's-1920's).
An early type of removable alcove formed by placing a simple long low storage chest in the corner of a room and hanging a scroll of calligraphy above it on the wall. A flower arranged in an Ikebana vase was also often added.
It was constructed of Zelkova (Keyaki) wood. It was finished with a natural clear Urushi lacquer to enhance the beautiful grain of the wood. It will be a great storage below the window or nice low bench.
