This is a vintage Japanese 3 section stacking Kimono chest called Isho Tansu from Taisho period (1910's-1920's). It was constructed entirely of Paulownia wood (Japanese Kirinoki). Designed for storage functionality with a minimalist natural wood grain beauty, it uses nearly every inch of usable interior space.

Paulownia was the desired wood for the construction of tansu such as these.  The characteristic of this wood allowed for its expansion during humid summer months to seal the drawers and keep the silk kimono dry while during dry winter months, the wood contracted to allow the kimono to circulate air to breath.

All of the iron hardware was hand made.  There are a few notable features to the hardware. The first is the squre Kakute handle with backing featured in Taisho period style tansu. The other is the recessed carrying handles on either side of each section.

An additional versatility is the ability to separate the sections for use in different rooms of the house.
