Hakone Yosegi Box
Introducing a beautifully crafted Hakone Yosegi Box, an exquisite example of traditional Japanese marquetry. This decorative box showcases intricate geometric patterns and rich, natural colors, achieved through the meticulous assembly of various wood pieces. Known for its beauty and precision, the Yosegi technique has been a hallmark of Japanese craftsmanship for centuries.

Originating from the Hakone region in Japan, Yosegi-Zaiku (寄木細工) is a traditional craft that dates back to the Edo period (1603-1868). The artisans of Hakone developed this unique form of marquetry by leveraging the diverse and abundant local wood varieties. These boxes are renowned for their intricate patterns, which are created by assembling different types of wood, each chosen for its color and grain.

A number of different types of wood are used in the creation of Yosegi:

White: Cornel, Mayumi, Spindle tree, Aohada tree
Black: Lignitized Japanese Judas tree
Yellow: Bitter wood, Mulberry tree, Lacquer tree
Brown: Styphnolobium Japonicum, Japanese hophornbeam
Blue: Magnolia obovata
Red: Chinese cedar
This is only a part. Other types of wood may be used.

The process involves slicing thin layers from these assembled blocks to create a veneer, which is then applied to the surface of the box. This technique not only showcases the natural beauty of the wood but also demonstrates the exceptional skill and precision of the craftsmen.
