This is an authentic Japanese Shishi figurine with Mari, ball from mid.1900's. Shishi is  translated as "lion” but it can also refer to a deer or dog with magical properties and the power to repel evil spirits. Shishi posting on the ball also means blessing and meaning of this scary face is to repel evil spirits.

It is from Kutani which a kliln in the village of Kutani ,now part of the city of Kaga. The porcelain style is known for multiple colors—such as greens, blues, yellows, purples, and reds—and bold designs covering most of the surface of each piece as you see from this piece.  It will be an excellent conversational piece for your home.
