This is an authentic Japanese Tanuki statue produced in the "Shigaraki ware" pottery style of Shigaraki City, Shiga Prefecture, one of Japan's most well-known lucky charms. Dating back to the 1920s, this earlier version of the tanuki features a pointier mouth, which distinguishes it from later designs.
Believed to bring commercial prosperity, these statues are often placed outside the entrance to shops. The standard tanuki has a good-natured face and a chubby, round body. He stands with his head slightly tilted, holding a traditional Japanese tokkuri (sake flask) and a promissory note (an unpaid bill) in his hands. This whimsical statue will welcome guests and add great charm to your home.
