Description
This is a mid century Japanese 2 section Kimono Tansu called Kamo Isho Tansu.  It was made using 100% Paulownia (Kirinoki) wood and it originated in the Kamo region, Nigata prefecture of Japan.  Tansu made in this area use the highest grade of Paulownia wood that comes from the snow country mountains of Aizu. This cold region provides a slow growth environment for the trees resulting in a strong wood that is both dense and heavy with a beautiful consistent grain.
 
The metal fittings have beatuiful detailed designs.
 
The thick solid wood combined with the beautiful joinery used to make this chest will provide many years of enjoyment and use. Originally used to store Japanese Kimono, it would work well in today's home as a clothes dresser or linen cabinet for daily use.
