It was hand crafted using the famous marquetry technique called Yosegi.  This craft originated in the hotspring resort town of Hakone, Japan during the Edo period and it was eventually designated a Japanese traditional craft by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

The painstaking technique used to create the marquetry geometric pattern starts by selecting solid blocks of elongated wood of differing colors then cutting and using glue to bundle them into a large solid wood block.  The top and bottom surface of the block looking identical to the design shown on the box is then planed into marquetry sheets which are applied to the box resulting in its artistic design mosaic.

This fine piece will be great to add to your collection.
