This is an antique Japanese beautiful Kanazawa Mizuya, two section Kitchen chest from Kanazawa region dated the Middle Meiji period ( 1880's - 1890's).

It is made of Keyaki (Zelkova) Hinoki (Cypress) and Sugi (Cryptomeria) woods and stunning wooden grains is from Keyaki wood. The handles are reproduction of hirukan style handles.

Originally used in the Japanese kitchen (Daidokoro), the bottom section held large jars of water for cooking while the upper section stored dishes, cookware, and utensils.

This tansu has become increasingly rare as they are now difficult to find in Japan especially in this fine condition.
