This is a 2 section authentic antique Japanese kitchen chest called Nagoya Mizuya tansu from late Meiji period (1890's-1910's). It was constructed using Cypress (Hinoki), Zelkova (Keyaki), and Cryptomeria (Suginoki) woods. Hinoki wood is commonly used for its beautiful golden brown hues and its clean grain that makes it appealing for furniture and design accents.
Originally made in the Nagoya region of Japan, these chests were used for the storage of dishware, cookware, eating and cooking utensils, as well as large jars for the storage of water for cooking.
