This is an antique 2 section Japanese Kitchen chest called Mizuya Tansu that comes from the Kansai region of Japan dated Late Meiji period (1890s-1910's).  It was constructed using Cypress (Hinoki), Zelkova (Keyaki), and Cryptomeria (Suginoki) woods.  Originally kept in an old Japanese farm home, it was used to store dishes, pots of water, and eating utensils.

It would make a great statement in any room of the house as well as functionality as a storage unit.
This tansu has become increasingly rare as they are now difficult to find in Japan especially in this fine condition.
