This is an antique Japanese Mizuya tansu, 2 section Kitchen chest from middle Meiji period (1880's-1890's). The elegant honey color tones of this tansu come from the­ Cryptomeria (Suginoki) and Hinoki (Cypress) woods.

Mizuya Dansu was used in the kitchen of a Japanese household for the storage of plates, utensils, food items and especially large pottery jars of water since running water was not readily available in the home. 

In your modern home, this Japanese chest is great for storing your crystal and dinner party tableware.
