This is an antique Japanese 2 section Mizuya tansu, kitchen chest from middle Meiji (1880-1890s'). This set stacks in two sections and features voluminous storage and traditional elegance.
The elegant color tones of this tansu come from the Keyaki (Zelkova), Suginoki (Cryptomeria) woods. Keyaki wood is valued in Japan and used often for furniture because of its beautiful color and grain.
Originally used in the Japanese kitchen (Daidokoro), the bottom section held large jars of water for cooking while the upper section stored dishes, cookware, and utensils.
This tansu has become increasingly rare as they are now difficult to find in Japan.
