This is an antique Japanese Kyoto Mizuya tansu from Middle Meiji period ( 1880's - 1890's). It is constructed out of Zelkova (Keyaki), Cypress (Hinoki) and Cryptomeria (Suginoki) woods. This set stacks in two sections and features voluminous storage and traditional elegance.
Originally used in the Japanese kitchen (Daidokoro), both sections held large jars of water for cooking while the upper section stored dishes, cookware, and utensils.
This tansu has become increasingly rare as they are now difficult to find in Japan especially in this fine condition. It features horizontal slats and sliding doors.
