This is a vintage Japanese flower vase for Ikebana, flower arrangement made of bamboo from Late Meiji period (1890's-1910's).
Tokonoma, alcove is a space at Nihonma, Japanese room with Tatami and it is used to display seasonal decorative items such as Ikebana, hanging scroll and incense burner.
The body is made of different wide size of bamboo stripes woven diagonally with twisted bundle of handles and has great patina gained through years. Fine piece like this can be used for a various of purposes.
