This is a vintage 3 section wooden Japanese Butsudan (literal meaning, "Buddha altar" or "House of Buddha") from early 1900's. It is an altar that is often found in temples and homes in Japan and primary use is for paying respects to the Buddha and to family ancestors.

The Butsudan is a wooden cabinet with doors that enclose and protect a Gohonzon or other Buddhist icons, typically a statue or painting of a Buddha or scroll. The doors are opened to display the icon during religious observances and closed before sunset. The highest platform is used for Buddha statue and below are for butsugu such as cadndlesticks, incense burners, bells, hanging decorations and platforms for placing offering. (This Butsudan includes hanging lanterns and a few accessroies). Below platforms are used to store Butsugu.

Fine details on this altar from the transom along the top front and bottom of platforms that depict all auspicious motifs.  The paintings, wooden carvings, metalworks, it has incredible details throughout.
