This is an antique Japanese Ko Tansu, small chest from Middle Meiji period (1880's - 1890's). It is made of Paulownia (Kirinoki) wood.
The Ko tansu is a very versatile chest. In Japan, it had many different uses depending on style, design, or wood type. Originally it was used as a personal storage chest, its present day use is suitable for a nightstand, side table, or an elegant room accent.
