This is a vintage Japanese Butsudan (literal meaning, "Buddha altar" or "House of Buddha") from Taisho period (1910's-1920's).  It is an altar that is often found in temples and homes in Japan.

The Butsudan is a wooden cabinet with double 4 panels doors and inside have original buddhist related items such as scrolls and hanging decorations. There are sliding doors and drawers to store candles, incense, and sutra books.

The doors are opened to display the icon during religious observances and closed before sunset.
