This is a vintage Japanese personal storage chest called Ko Tansu from early Showa period (1940's).  It was used to store letters, documents, books and other items for daily use.  Made of 100% Paulownia wood (Kirinoki).  Inside of compartment of sliding doors have a nice shelf on one side.

It has an original sticker in the drawer which is from Matsumoto Tansu store in Nihonbashi.

Contemporary uses for this piece include placement on a desk for additional office storage or using this as an elegant side table.
