This is a vintage covered wooden lacquered container for tea service called Chabitsu that was carved  from mid.1900's using the famous Japanese craft known as Kamakura Bori. Made to be kept stored on or under a table, it would be ready at a moments notice to serve tea to visiting friends, family or guests.

Its original use was to house the teacups, teapot, coasters, green tea, and napkins for service but its contemporary use makes it practical to store an assortment of small objects or collectibles.
