This a vintage Japanese 2 section tea chest called Cha Tansu from Taisho (1910's-1920's). It was constructed out of Mulberry (Kuwanoki), Persimmon (Kakinoki), Horse chestnut (Tochinoki) and Paulownia (Kirinoki) woods.
There are many nicely detailed decorative features worth mentioning. Persimmon wood is finely carved shaped in Japanese pine tree for handles and flower shaped pull fo the door instead of common metal. Mulberry wooden grains are just like book match and flowing beatutifully. It is done in excellent joineries and done by skillful artisan.
It has a pair of glass main display doors and a mini Tokonoma (tea ceremony alcove) to showcase your collections.
The tea chest was typically used in a Japanese home in the room similar to the western living room. It was used to keep items for casual tea service as well as storage for an assortment of items for the home.
