This a vintage Japanese tea chest called Cha Tansu from Taisho period (1910's-1920's). It was constructed out of Japanese Tamo Ash (known as Toneriko in Japan), Horse chestnut (Tochinoki) and Paulownia (Kirinoki) woods. It has nice cut-out on the back and all details including wooden grains are incredible.
The tea chest was typically used in a Japanese home in the room similar to the western living room. It was used to keep items for casual tea service as well as storage for an assortment of items for the home.
