This is an antique Japanese stair chest called Kaidan or Kaidan Tansu from middle Meiji (1880's-1890's). It was constructed out of Cypress (Hinoki) and Cryptomeria (Suginoki) woods.
It has a combination of sliding doors and drawers for an abundance of storage space and the shallow steps allows for a smaller foot print to allow versatility in displaying this tansu. The incline is from left to right.
