This is an authentic Japanese Cha Bako, tea ceremony set from mid. to late 1900's.It comes with the accessories to enjoy making and serving Matcha green tea.  The box was lacquered in Urushi and the separator section holds the whisk in place.

This special lacquer is called Shunkei- nuri,supposedly developed by a 14th-century monk named Shunkei, was a popular method in the 17th century of using clear lacquer to allow the natural appearance of the wood underneath to show through. 

It is an elegant formal way to practice tea ceremony as compared to the daily use.
