This is a Japanese personal storage chest called Ko Tansu from late 1900's. It was used to store letters, documents, books and other items for daily use. Made of 100% Paulownia wood (Kirinoki).
The backplates of each handles have beautiful ivy designs. It is made of thick Kiri wood so tansu is very stedy.
Contemporary uses for this piece include placement on a desk for additional office storage or using this as an elegant side table.
