This is a 2 section Japanese clothing chest called Kimono Kamo Isho Tansu from late 1900's.  It was constructed entirely out of Paulownia (Kirinoki) wood. Upper section has a large compartment with sliding trays which is ideal to store linens, sweater and shirts and lower section has 3 drawers.

Called a Kamo Tansu, it was made in Niigata Prefecture, Japan.  The wood came from the Aizu region which is known for its ultra high quality Paulownia wood.  This wood is heavy and dense due to the slow growing trees of this snow country environment making for a beautifully crafted work of art that will last for generations.

Originally used for kimono storage, it would work well in today's home as a linen cabinet or dresser.
