This is a Japanese Buddhist wooden drum/bell called Mokugyo from mid. 1900's.

Mokugyo is used to accompany chants (sutras) and Buddhist ceremonies. The handle of this slit drum is decorated with stylized fish which hold in their mouths a ball, symbol of the univese. Having no eyelids, the fish symbolizes wakeful attention and vigilance in devotion. It has great peaceful sound.
