This is an antique Japanese small lacquered Zelkova chest called Ko Keyaki Tansu from the Middle Meiji period (1880's - 1890's).

Originally used as a personal storage chest, its present day use is suitable for a nightstand, side table, or an elegant room accent.  With its clear Urushi lacquer, the beauty of the wood grain shows through.  The body of the chest was constructed in Hinoki (Cypress) and the drawer backs are Sugi (Cryptomeria).  The lockplates have various auspicious motifs.
