This is a modern hight-end Japanese Urushi lacquered personal storage chest called Ko Tansu, also a Sendai tansu. It was used to store letters, documents, books and other items for daily use.  It is made of Paulownia wood (Kirinoki) and Japanese cypress (hinoki)

Thickness of wood used in the drawers, joineries, continuous wooden grains, all details are incredible.

Contemporary uses for this piece include placement on a desk for additional office storage or using this as an elegant side table.
