This is an antique Japanese personal storage chest called Ko Tansu date Middle Meiji period (1880's - 1890's). It was used to store letters, documents, books and other items for daily use. Made of 100% Paulownia (Kirinoki) and Cryptomeria (Suginoki ) woods.
The tall narrow size is very practical for placement in any room of the home. It was a tansu maker's commissioned piece requested by the previous owner.
