This is a 2 section antique Japanese kitchen chest called Mizuya Tansu from Late Meiji period (1890's-1910's). It was made out of Zelkova (Keyaki), Japanese Cypress (Hinoki) and Cryptomeria(Suginoki) woods. It comes in different size of compartments.
Originally used in a Japanese kitchen to store dishes, cooking utensils, and jars of water collected from the local stream, its contemporary use functions well as a storage chest or cabinet.
