This is an antique 2 section Japanese lacquered clothing chest called Kimono Kasane Isho Tansu that originated from the Matsumoto region of Japan.  It was constructed from Keyaki (Zelkova), Suginoki (Cryptomeria) and Hinoki (Cypress) woods from Middle Meiji period (1880's - 1890's) and all of the iron hardware was hand made.

Originally used for kimono storage, it can be used for the same purpose as well as storage for clothes or linens.
