This is an authentic antique 2 section Japanese Urushi lacquered stacking Kasane Isho Tansu from the Yonezawa region of Japan daed the Middle Meiji period (1880's - 1890's).

It is made of Paulownia (Kirinoki) and Cryptomeria (Suginoki) woods.

Tucked remotely into the snowy mountains of the Tohoku region,  the castle town of Yonezawa developed a chest on chest style for Kimono storage.  The craftsmen of the region were strongly influenced by the refined lacquer finishing techniques of the Mikuni  area of the Japan Sea coast. The distinctive lock plate motif and the placement of the kobirakido (hinged door compartment) in the top section of the chest rather than the lower section, helps to distinguish the Yonezawa provenance.

The original Urushi lacquer protects the beautiful rich grain of the underlying wood throughout. It is an elegant chest that would decorate any home decor.
