This is an antique Japanese 2 door hinged personal storage chest called lacquer Ko Ryo Biraki Tansu that was used for storing small items and books from the Middle Meiji period ( 1880's - 1890's).
It was made from 100% Cryptomeria (Suginoki) wood with iron Kakute handles. It would work well as a side table or a decorative storage chest.
