This is an antique Japanese personal storage chest called Ko Tansu from middle Meiji period (1880'-1890's). It was used to store letters, documents, books and other items for daily use.
Made of 100% Paulownia (Kirinoki) wood, the iron fittings were all hand made and handles have Gunpai style handles.
Contemporary uses for this piece include placement on a desk for additional office storage or using this as an elegant side table.
