This is an antique Japanese personal storage chest called Ko Tansu from late Meiji period (1890's-1910's).  It was made using Japanese Paulownia (Kirinoki) wood. Originally used to store small accessories and bric-a-brac, its contemporary use would function well as a side table or bedside stand.
