This is an antique Japanese personal storage chest called Ko Tansu date Middle Meiji period (1880's - 1890's).  It was used to store letters, documents, books and other items for daily use. Made of Paulownia wood (Kirinoki) and Cryptomeria (Suginoki) which is only used on the back.

The iron fittings were all hand made and the handles are Gunbai style.

Contemporary uses for this piece include placement on a desk for additional office storage or using this as an elegant side table.
