This is a 2 section antique Japanese Nihon Matsu Kasane Tansu from Nihonmatsu region in Fukushima prefecture.  Used for the storage of Kimono, its substantial capacity was overshadowed by its beautiful design.

Its age is from the 1880's to 1890's (mid Meiji era). 

It was constructed out of Cryptomeria (Suginoki) woods.  The wiped lacquer technique was used in its finish to retain the gorgeous grain pattern of the

The iron lock plates incorporate the auspicious Tsuru Kame (Crane and turtle) design while the double action locks are decorated with side by side Chrysanthemum blossoms.
