This is an antique Japanese Goshu Mizuya tansu sometimes referred as a Kyoto kitchen chest from late Meiji period (1890's-1910's). This set stacks in two sections and features voluminous storage and traditional elegance.

It was constructed using Cypress (Hinoki), Zelkova (Keyaki) and Cryptomeria (Suginoki) woods.

Originally used in the Japanese kitchen (Daidokoro), the bottom section held large jars of water for cooking while the upper section stored dishes, cookware, and utensils.

This tansu has become increasingly rare as they are now difficult to find in Japan.
