Antique Japanese Choba Tansu (21N-D1)

This is an antique 1 section Japanese merchant chest called Choba Tansu.

It is constructed from Paulownia wood (Kirinoki) and Cryptomeria (Suginoki) woods from Late Meiji period (1890's-1910's).

It has nice detailed floral shaped pulls.

Merchant chests were displayed with pride by the owner of a shop to give customers the impression of success and longevity of the business establishment.  It was almost always situated in a prominent location of the store to catch the view of the client.
